It may have changed since the NYT took it over, but originally the word for each day (going way into the future), and the list of "valid" five letter words were all in the javascript source.

edit: just checked, still the same.

So similar though it must be an infringement to sell it as IP for a mint?
The New York Times think it was worth it, and they're not a bunch of thickos.

Its not whether it's original or not, it's that it is successful. I think the twist that did it is that you only get one a day - it's not trying to steal all your time.

My word today is aroma. Haven't had a recent one that any English speaker wouldn't know.
That was the easy one. I'd never even heard of the word I got.
Yesterday's word that I found difficult was "AGORA". I'd never even heard of it or seen it used anywhere.

I've got deep into these games. I switched to Wordle hard mode a few days ago after not losing at normal after 30 games. I lost a hard mode after 3 games hehe . As well as Wordle there's

Nerdle https://nerdlegame.com/ . Wordle but numbers and +-÷×= in 8 tiles to do a sum ie. 10+20=30. There's a Nerdle Mini option in the settings for a 6 tile version.

Quordle https://www.quordle.com/#/ . 4 simultaneous Wordles to get in 9 rows.

I’m enjoying Nerdle more than wordle as I find it more taxing. Pleased with an easy three today!

For wordle I start with HOUSE & TRAIN, all the vowels and most common consonants. Sometimes only need one of them before moving on, but predominantly finish within 4.

Yes choice of starting word is critical I think. I use TABLE. HOUSE is a good one though.

I got annoyed with Wordle today.

The colours used for "correct letter correct position" and "correct letter, wrong place" tiles are not great for a colourblind Muppet such as myself. I had three letters in three guesses today, but they were all in the wrong place in the word. But my colourblindness had me convinced the game was saying they were in the right place so my next few guesses were way off. It was only when I clicked on the "?" in the top left of the page that my error was revealed to me, and with only one guess left at that point, failure was odds-on... frown

Why aren't you using a colour-blindness browser extension?

They have such things? I'm a simple man (some would say VERY simple) and I wasn't aware such things existed. Mind you, I'm not sure I fully understand browser extensions and how to use them anyway!

There's a high contrast mode in the settings for Wordle that changes the tile colours to orange and blue.

I got today's on 5th go but only because I clicked every letter to get the last one. Really obscure! Three of us on the same IP got the same word

Try Worldle (note the extra 'L') - it shows you the outline of a country to identify. If you guess wrong you get an indication of how far out you are and in what direction.

I'd be useless at that, I don't do geography.

There's also Absurdle, it uses the same word list as Wordle but the algorith changes the word as you guess letters until its cannot change it anymore (or something like that).

Effectively it's Wordle with a bad attitude
