Does it even matter. Any 'guidance' is for the five vaguely interested people in this thread and not going to reach the eyes of the users as a whole.
May as well just leave them to it.
Might not matter to you and that's fineMay as well just leave them to it.
If we are creating issues for the mods that take longer to resolve than cleaning up the spammers I'm pretty sure the five vaguely interested people would rather not do that.
I tried to help too.
But with constant mixed messages, and still no resolution.
May as well leave them (the Mods) to it.
Each to their own though of course (the Users, if they wish to 'help').

OK So this is a change to previous guidance

One "report" per spammer user ID was all that was required
Then respond to the threads either saying reported (or humorous comment AKA Rusty) that should stop other PH'rs also reporting reducing the clean up needed in the reporting process (which none of us can see)
Now
"Just report one post - maybe put something in the comments to say "Spammers - hundreds of em"
Post up in the threads to say reported to help reduce the level of reports submitted?
Have I got that right
I'm not trying to be difficult here, I'm just saying that as soon as we see "A" single report come in we will act on it "if we're around/". Previously

All I'm trying to do is to stop you wasting your time reporting every thread.
This is how I works for me, when I come back to my lappy I check the PH members dump (new registration area. Scan that for members who have just signed up and see if any have made a post or raised a thread, check them out to see what they have posted etc. I can see instantly from the members page how many threads/posts each member has just posted.
The limit of posts/threads a noobie can post in the first 24 hours is 5, so lots of new members making 2-5 posts indicates a possible spammers I'll check and ban all those that fall into this category deleting all their posts.
I'll them go into the Mods forum and check on the number of reports that have come in this morning for instance there was about 40, I'll reply to a couple and close and then delete the rest as it just clutters up the forum.
So to sum up we only really need one report from one spammer, not one report for each thread he's raised.
Hope that clarifies and again thanks for all your help.

In reality however, PistonHeads management is exploiting your goodwill and willingness to do this and while you and other mods continue to do so they have no incentive to fix the problem. As many people, me included, have highlighted, it's relatively trivial - regardless of how archaic the codebase is - to implement something in code to stop the majority of the posts.

I personally quite enjoy bashing a spammer. Makes me feel like I’ve achieved something that day

This is something I don't understand either. The forum software is somewhat outdated, and various (major) bugs have been reported by PH'er over the years. In reality however, PistonHeads management is exploiting your goodwill and willingness to do this and while you and other mods continue to do so they have no incentive to fix the problem. And yet all they do is keep patching it with band aid, and intrusive software (being unable to post anything remotely resembling SQL statements for example and also the anti flood system, another pointless addition).

The one report per spammer was precisely what I did this morning, along with trying to mark the post as reported (but the anti flood system made that difficult as I was forced to wait around 10 seconds or so before I could post after reporting).Clear to me - as per previously laid down guidelines

Here's a relevant explanation pitched at the demographic and age range of the forum audience about how the PH Towers resources are allocated.
The Main Dig Team. For the revenue making website, business, and associated maintenance of said.
Then the Second Dig Team that Carenza can run, with the allocated resources of a single mini excavator to keep the old stbox forum that came as part of the package deal that somehow still drives X% of click engagement due to historic spider links and search queries from boomers with money, but no apps.

If the cleanup effort on the part of the mods is greater then the spam removal itself, then surely there’s a cast-iron case for just turning this on its head and doing what many have suggested and putting all new accounts into an approval queue.
The mods’ still have to put in the graft, but not one spam post makes it through and we don’t need to report anything.
There simply cannot be that many genuine new accounts who might need to wait 10-30 mins before posting to make any difference.

I SO hope that isn't a euphemism...P.S. Everyone moaning about this - we have a (largely) great community which offers help, advice and much more.
And it's free. Let's not moan.
Maybe buy a few new mirrors for the mod's scooters?

We are actively trying to reduce spam and are still investigating more routes available to us. Unfortunately thanks to the forums being on very ageing technology, it's not easy.
A huge thanks to the mods for continuing to bash the spam as it comes in, we'll try and put an end to it as soon as we can.
